Common Mistakes Introducing Yourself in Spanish
If you are a Spanish learner, you have probably said, thought, or heard these types of structures when you or someone else is introducing themselves in Spanish:
– ¿Qué es tu nombre?
– ¿Cómo llama?
– Me llamo es…
Is it so? Well, let us tell you that they are not correct. These are very common mistakes in Spanish.
Do you find it challenging to think of how to ask for a name or introduce yourself in Spanish?
That probably happens because there are two structures in Spanish to introduce ourselves. So it’s normal if you confuse them. The important thing is that today we are going to explain both so that you can see the differences and thus understand and use them correctly.
How To Introduce Yourself In Spanish
1.
The first structure that we will show you is similar to English. It consists of the possessive pronoun + the noun “name” + the verb to be.
The question is formed like this:
¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?)
And it is answered as follows:
However, this structure is a bit less common and tends to be used in more formal contexts like schools, job interviews, hospitals, etc.

The second structure is very different from English, but it is in fact the most used structure in conversational contexts.
The question is formed like this:
¿Cómo te llamas? (What is your name?)
And it is answered as follows:
Other examples are:
– ¿Cómo se llama tu restaurante favorito? (What is the name of your favorite restaurant?)
– Mi restaurante favorito se llama Alma. (My favorite restaurant’s name is Alma)
– ¿Cómo se llaman tus padres? (What are your parent’s names?)
– Mis padres se llaman Jorge y Gloria. (My parents’ names are Jorge and Gloria)
– ¿Cómo se llama tu perro? (What is your dog’s name?)
– Mi perro se llama Lucas. (My dog’s name is Lucas)
Keep in mind that with this structure the verb “es” is not used. This is a very common mistake.
Then remember that you have two options to introduce yourself in Spanish: “mi nombre es”, “me llamo”, but you can not say “me llamo es”.
