Common mistakes introducing yourself in Spanish

Errores comunes presentándote en español

You have probably said, you have thought or heard this type of structures:

Is it very confusing for you to think about how to ask for a name or how to introduce yourself in Spanish?

This is probably because we have two structures in Spanish to introduce ourselves. One of them is very similar than English:

But this structure sounds more formal and it’s no very used between locals.

The second one is very different than English, but it’s the most common in conversational contexts.

In this one, stead of using possessives pronouns (mi = my), we use personal pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, nosotras, ellos, ellas, ustedes). These are always optional in Spanish, then you can choose when to use them or depending on the context.

However, you do need to use the reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nos, se) before the verb.

In addition, in this structure we don’t put “es” because the verb is “llamarse”, so we don’t need the verb “to be”.

Remember you have two options: “mi nombre es”, “me llamo”, but you can not say “me llamo es”.
